Bubble Skirts Are the Unexpected Trend of the Summer—Here’s How to Style Them

There’s no arena where the old adage ‘what goes around comes around’ holds more true than fashion. Trends are constantly coming in-going out-coming back in style. One perfect example? The bubble skirt.  A staple in the ‘80s (cue images of Cyndi Lauper music videos), they’re back in a big way. “Bubble skirts are trending right now due to their playful yet chic aesthetic, which aligns perfectly with the current fashion movement towards nostalgia and self-expression,” explains celebrity stylist Michelle Thomas, founder of The Kut Studios. “These skirts, characterized by their voluminous, gathered hems, bring a touch of whimsy and a nod to the fashion of the 1980s and early 2000s—eras that are seeing a resurgence in today’s style landscape.”

And, while it may seem like bubble skirts are pretty specific, Thomas says they’re surprisingly versatile, just as easily dressed up or down. More styling specifics in a moment, but there are a few key things to keep in mind when it comes to ensuring this silhouette is flattering. The key is to balance the voluminous shape with the rest of your outfit, as well as consider your body type, explains fashion expert Jacqueline Harris, co-founder and designer of I Love Tyler Madison. If you’re more petite, opt for bubble skirts that are slightly less voluminous and hit above the knee so as to avoid overwhelming your frame, she suggests. Have an hourglass shape? Bubble skirts are very flattering because they accentuate your waistline, she notes, adding that pairing it with a tucked-in-top will help maintain your proportion. Those who are pear-shaped should choose ones that flare out starting at the waist, whereas those who are more apple-shaped should make sure their skirt has a defined waistband and pair it with a more structured top, she suggests.

Here, five different ways to style a bubble skirt.

1. Casual Chic

“Pair your bubble skirt with a simple and fitted t-shirt or tank top to balance the volume of the skirt,” advises Harris. Ballet flats or casual sneakers keep the look comfortable but still effortlessly stylish, says Thomas.

2. Office Ready

Go for a bubble skirt that hits at the knee or longer. Add a structured blouse or fitted top into the skirt and add a structured blazer as an added layer on top. “This combination works because the tailored pieces add sophistication and structure, which offsets the playful nature of the bubble skirt. Finish with classic pumps for a polished appearance,” Thomas recommends.

3. Evening Elegance

Try a bubble skirt in lieu of your favorite dress for date night or a special event. Thomas advises looking for one in a satin or silk fabric. Pair it with an off-the-shoulder top, strappy heels and a statement earring or necklace to add the finishing touch.

4. Boho Vibes

While you typically should go for a more tailored shirt with a bubble skirt, Thomas says you can also opt for a more flowy, boho-style blouse if you’re after a super chill, cool California girl energy. The key? Add a belt at the waist to keep the bubble skirt’s shape defined, she says. You can also pick a bubble skirt in more of a midi-length for a more boho effect.

5. Sporty Edge

Love athleisure? “Try a bubble skirt with a cropped hoodie or sweatshirt. The sporty top gives the playful skirt a modern, edgy twist. Pair with high-top sneakers or chunky boots for a trendy, streetwear-inspired look,” suggests Thomas. Or, try it with an oversized t-shirt (yes, fudging the proportions rule a little bit) for a very sporty, cool-girl effect.
